What Is the Rarest Precious Metal?

Iridium is often cited as the rarest precious metal by annual mine output, with rhodium, osmium and ruthenium also among the scarcest. The answer depends on how you measure rarity, because abundance in the earth’s crust and annual production give different rankings.

Rarity by crustal abundance

In the earth’s crust, the platinum group metals are all present in very small amounts, typically measured in parts per billion. Iridium, osmium, rhodium and ruthenium sit at the low end of that scale, and gold and platinum are also rare by most everyday measures.

Rarity by annual mine output

Most rankings that name a single rarest metal use annual output, because that shows how much is actually available to buyers and industry. On that measure iridium is often placed first, followed by rhodium, ruthenium and osmium. Output figures change from year to year, so check the latest mining statistics before relying on a ranking.

Why rarity does not always mean price

Rarity is one factor. Demand matters too. Rhodium has had a very high price because it is used in automotive catalysts, while iridium has a narrower market. A metal can be rare and still cheap if demand is weak, and a common metal can be expensive if demand is strong.

What this means for buyers

Rare platinum group metals usually trade in thinner markets. That can mean wider spreads between buying and selling prices, fewer dealers, and more effort to verify purity. Before buying, ask how the metal would be resold and what the dealer charges on the way in and out.

How to Read Rarity Data

Reliable rarity data comes from published sources such as the United States Geological Survey mineral commodity summaries, which report annual production and reserves. Crustal abundance tables are useful for context but do not show how much metal is actually mined or available.

Check the year of the data, the country definitions used, and whether recycled metal is included. Rankings can shift as new mines open or close, so use the most recent figures before drawing conclusions.

Key Points

  • Iridium is often cited as the rarest by annual mine output.
  • Rarity and price are different: demand matters as much as supply.
  • Thin markets can mean wider spreads when buying and selling.
  • Use current USGS or industry data before relying on any ranking.
