Are Rare Earth Metals Really Rare?

Rare earth metals are not especially scarce in the Earth’s crust. Several are as common as copper. They are considered rare because they are widely dispersed, seldom concentrated in economic deposits, and difficult to separate from one another.

Abundance versus economic concentration

Geological abundance measures how much of an element is present in the crust. Economic concentration measures how much is found in one place at a grade that can be mined profitably. Rare earths score well on the first measure and poorly on the second.

Why processing is the real constraint

Even when ore is available, separating the individual elements requires specialised plants, skilled operators, permits and long lead times. A few countries have built most of this capacity, so supply depends heavily on their policies and investment decisions.

Heavy and light elements

  • Light rare earths are more widely available.
  • Heavy rare earths, such as dysprosium and terbium, come from fewer deposits.
  • Shortages tend to appear first in the heavy elements.

What this means for investors

A project that finds rare earths is not the same as one that can produce separated oxides in commercial volumes. Investors should assess the processing route, offtake agreements and permitting timeline, not just the resource estimate.

Key Points

  • Rare earths are dispersed rather than scarce.
  • Processing capacity is the main constraint.
  • Heavy rare earths are the tightest part of the market.
  • A resource is not the same as a producing supply chain.
