Export Factoring Singapore
Export factoring in Singapore lets a business sell its export receivables to a factor for early payment, improving cash flow while the buyer pays on agreed terms. It is often used by exporters that sell on open account and need working capital before customers pay.
How the process works
The exporter ships goods and issues invoices to the overseas buyer. The factor advances a large part of the invoice value, usually shortly after shipment. When the buyer pays, the factor releases the balance less its fees. The factor may also manage collection and credit checks on the buyer.
Recourse and non-recourse
With recourse factoring, the exporter repays the factor if the buyer does not pay. With non-recourse factoring, the factor takes on some of the buyer credit risk, usually for an extra fee and subject to conditions. Read the terms carefully, since the difference matters if a buyer defaults.
Costs and suitability
- Compare the discount fee, service charges and any minimum volume.
- Check the advance rate and how quickly funds are released.
- Consider whether your customers are comfortable with the factor contacting them.
Preparing Your Receivables
Factors assess the quality of the invoices they buy. Keep clean records, confirm shipment and delivery evidence for each invoice, and check that the buyer has accepted the goods and the payment terms. Disputed or overdue invoices are harder to finance.
Common Mistakes
Common mistakes include factoring invoices for buyers who have not been credit-checked, failing to disclose disputes, and signing without understanding the recourse terms. Each can cost more than the discount fee saves.
